In the past three days in Hall 4 of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center where intangible cultural heritage is displayed, Wang Shihui, 74, has been busy with his carving of a Tujia Ethnic Village.

The 1-meter-long bamboo carving, two years of painstaking work, was made according to the architectural style of the Tujia ethnic group. It depicts the village life and customs of the Tujia with a carving of a wedding party escorting a bride to the groom’s home, farmers busy in an oil manufacturing workshop, a water-powered grinder and a water wheel.

“We live in a mountainous area of western Hunan which is known for its beautiful natural scenery. Through my work I want to introduce the Tujia traditions and customs to visitors, especially the very generous Shenzhen people who made my trip possible,” said Wang.

His bamboo carving had been listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Hunan Province.

Wang said he couldn’t afford the logistics cost to transport his work to Shenzhen, which is 1,300 kilometers from his home.

Two Shenzhen people donated 15,000 RMB (2,308 USD) for the cost of transporting two carvings to Shenzhen.

Wang started as an apprentice carpenter with his grandfather at age 12 and was able to carve bamboo houses on his own by age 15. “In modern society, some heritages and traditional skills had only been legend for the younger generation. I want to preserve the traditional skills and pass them on,” he said.
